about

Gaud Sarang is the only afternoon raga of the Kalyan group which predominantly comprises evening ragas. The vakra (twist and turn) movement of this raga makes it unique and challenging to render. The first composition is a vilambit (slow tempo) khayal in a tala cycle of 14 beats called Jhumra. This is followed by a drut (fast) bandish (composition) in Ektal of 12 beats. Both compositions depict the protagonist, a yearning nayika, pleading and bemoaning her lover’s neglect of her, through long anxious months.
